Newbie here will pay money
This is the first computer I've tried to build. Here is what I have and what I've done so far:
I have an E5200 intel processor, Samsung DDR2 6400 memory 2 1gb sticks, DVDRW drive. 80Gb IDE hard drive, and a 420w power supply.
I believe my mobo supports all this. I know it supports chip and says it supports up to 800 ddr2. I assume my memory is not more than this? I hooked everything up what I presume to be correctly. Here is what I've done please tell me if anything is wrong:
put cpu in correctly,
put memory in correctly,
not sure about hard drive and DVD drive, I just hooked them both up to the IDE cable (obviously hooked cable up to mobo) and also hooked them both up to power supply. They each have alot more plug ins etc. but these are the only two I presumed I needed.
also not sure if I hooked up the power led, sys, reset etc. (all that stuff coming from the case)
I did hook up the front audio and usb correctly though.
I also plugged in the 4pin plug from power supply to mobo. I didn't do anything else. I have read all this stuff saying you have to set up bios etc. not sure about that. I was hoping it would work out of the box.
Anyway, I plugged it in and processor fan was running, sounded like hard drive was running, and dvd drive worked. also keyboard and mouse lit up (working I guess) No weird noises etc. everything seemed to be running smoothly. I hooked up monitor to onboard monitor hookup.
Nothing came on monitor it sat there like it wasn't getting a signal. I tired putting Vista in DVD drive and the drive started working but nothing to see on monitor also tried putting in mobo cd but nothing. I feel I am missing a major step. I do have an old Nvidia graphics card I could put in to see if it will work then but don't think that would help.
PLEASE any help is appreciated as I'm sure I've done something wrong.
NO JOKING! if anyone can help me get this sucker working and will send me their paypal address, I will send them $25-$75 or so depending on how in depth we got to go. I would much rather do that than pay comp tech $100 or more to come out. Sorry for the long post, but wanted you to know what you are working with here which ain't much
Thanks for your help in advance.

money is not necessary here, all people here will help you for free.
now, first things first,
motherboard brand, make, and models, please.
are you sure it can support the cpu?
you are sure you plugged in the 4 pin power-connector from the power-supply
to the mobo? not the 4 pin plug from the cpu fan.
have you installed the "speaker" that comes with the computer case; it should be
a small black button-like thing with a 4-input plug, labelled as "speaker", without
it, you can not hear ANY of the motherboard's error code beeps.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-G31M-Es2L You can go to www.gigabyte.com.tw and search socket 775 mobos and find the ES2L one I have in case I missed something.
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 freq2.5gh core45nm (fsb800mhz) socket lga775 L2Cache 2MB PCG 06
DVD RW drive (I'm assuming most any new board will support this but if you need more detail let me know)
Hard Drive Western digital 80GB IDE drive it says: 5vdc......0.77A 12vdc.......0.45A
model# WD800BB-32CCB0 (I purchased this used for $15 but wish I had gotten a SATA oh well)
Memory: Samsung
Samsung 1 GB DDR2 RAM PC2-6400 240-Pin DIMM General Features: 1 GB DDR2 (Double Data Rate) RAM
PC2-6400 800 MHz 240-Pin RoHS compliant
I do not have the little speaker hooked up not sure where it goes but will try to find out. Should I hook up IDE cable to both hard drive and DVD drive (it only has space for 2 IDE hook ups so I guess if I want to add another dvd drive I'm sol) but no big deal, also should I have power hooked up to both? I have the
Also I have the 2x2 pin coming from the powerbox hooked up to the only spot on mobo it will go (most other hookups are 1x4). The only hookups I have left from PS is 2 more regular
1x4 hookups and a small litte 1x4 (very small) hookup left at the end of the two stndard 1x4 hookups.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Two things: first, the power supply that came with that case (it's an Okia) is of questionable quality. I'd strongly suggest getting a quality powersupply from our list: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...195#brand_list) Even if that's not what is causing your problems now, it will cause them later. Low quality PSUs have a habit of dying and taking other expensive parts with them.
Secondly, have you tried the link Shadowpr provided? You must take everything out of the case to ensure that there isn't some problem with something shorting on the case. Just bare minimum components. Plug the monitor in _before_ you power it up.
EDIT: Ps, I'm not sure how much power the components you listed need. Before you replace the PSU, let someone else comment how how much juice you need.
Also, regarding the money, I think it's safe to say that this forum has saved all of our butts multiple times, and personally I feel I owe it to the group to help whenever I can. We're all in this for the fun of it.

With onboard video, all you need is a quality 300 watt power supply. It is NOT a good idea to use an Okia PSU, but it *should* at least work. The hard drive and DVD drive both need to be jumpered Cable Select, with the hard drive on the end of the cable.
I have to emphasize - use the OUT OF CASE troubleshooting that you were linked to. That's the only way to validate the core components. CPU (with heatsink/fan installed and plugged in), ONE ram module, and monitor. NOTHING else connected. PSU must have the 24 pin and the 4 pin connected.

Thanks for your help. I will take it out of case and try to get the speaker hooked up. Am I correct in assuming something should come up on the monitor if I have it hooked up right. Like I said in my first post, I haven't changed any settings (don't even know how) on mobo.
The processor fan runs, leds on front of case light up, dvd drive works, and sounds like hard drive is running? So I feel like I at least have something hooked up
Does my mobo support all my goodies memory (2 1gb sticks) processor etc.
Thanks so much for all your help!!!!

When you say The hard drive and DVD drive both need to be jumpered Cable Select, with the hard drive on the end of the cable. I have DVD drive at the end of the ide cable (I guess that's what it is) I will switch and make hard drive at the end and DVD in the middle. Of course I then have this plugged into the mobo at the only spot it will go.
I also have 1x4 power supply connector plugged into both hard drive and dvd drive. so 2 1x4 power connector in use. The 24 pin is plugged into mobo (only spot it will go)
So You're saying I should remove one of my 1GB sticks and just use 1 not 2 to test?
Should something come up on monitor if it is hooked up correctly (again haven't changed anything on mobo or jumpered it or anything like that). Not sure what that is anyway?
Thanks,
Eric

If everything was working, something should come up on the monitor.
For now, you need to leave the dvd and hard drive out of the equation.
Get a post screen first, then add those.
Follow that procedure, and you should at least have a better idea of what's wrong.

Newbie here will pay money
Ok,
Hooked it up outside case (sat it on a piece of cardboard)
I had it hooked up without dvd or hard drive. When nit turned on it immediately started beeping. I started counting them, but it just kept beeping. I got all the way up to 44 then just turned the comp back off figuring it would just beep forever.
I have the case fan hooked up with processor inside of course, both sticks of 1gb ddr2 memory, the 2x2 connector from psu hooked up to mobo, the speaker, front audit, front use, and the other little hookups led reset etc. (I'm almost positive I have these hooked up right)
And of course the main 24 pin connector and that's it well and monitor screwed into back of mobo.
Any thoughts,
Thanks
Eric

Please read the procedure AGAIN........the ONLY things you connect are:
1. CPU with heatsink/fan, plugged into the correct board header
2. ONE stick of ram
3. Power supply, with the 24 and the 4 connected
4. Monitor
5. Speaker
You start it with a screwdriver. You do not connect ANYTHING up from the case except the speaker. It's easiest to do this if you remove the power supply and the speaker from the case and set the case aside.
Constant beeps are a ram issue.

All I have plugged up now is cpu fan, 24 pin connector to mb from psu, 2x2 connector to mb from psu, that little speaker, and one stick of memory. Monitor also
How do I start it with screwdriver, also I'm assuming you touch it to two pins somewhewre, do I need to hold the screwdriver against the pins the whole time, or will it run on its own after you start it like this.
Thanks

The on off switch on the front of your case is known as a 'momentary switch' meaning it only makes contact for a 'moment' obviously while you press it. The two pins you 'momentarily' short together are the pins on the motherboard that you would normally connect this switch to.
It sends a signal to the motherboard to send a signal to the power supply to start up.

The 2 pins for the rower switch are located next to your IDE connextor. See page 23 of your manual. Just
touch the screwdriver to the 2 pins and you will hear it turn on. Don't continue to hold the screwdriver to the pins.

place the screw driver (metal part) momentarily across the two pins that the front panel connector for (pwr on) normally would be connected to.
that will be $25.00 please... just kidding LOL
you bought that stuff at geeks didn't you

Ok,
I tried every combo with the other memory stick, and it just beeped no matter what combo.
Is it safe to assume that stick is garbage?
Until I can get another one, can I do everything I need to do with just the one stick?
What should I do now? Thanks for all your help I feel like I'm actually doing something now (actually you guys are doing something

You can jumper the HD cable select and connect to the end of the data cable as GLC stated earlier. If all is well, it should show on the monitor as it boots up. You can also enter the BIOS (delete key on boot up to see if it's recognized)

ok here is what monitor says:
main processor pentium dual core e5200 @ 1.8ghz (200x9)
xcpuid 0001067A Patch ID: 0A07
Memory Testing 1038272k ok+ 9M share dmemory
Memory runs at single channel
IDE channel 0 Master W@C 2".04
IDE Channel Slave None
Detecting IDE Drives.....
Then at the bottom it says
BIOS Setup XpressRecovery Boot Menu Qflash
02/05/2009-G31-ICH7-6A990G0EC-00
That's all it says. What should I do now? I just turned it off to await further instruction form the xperts. Does this mean my DVD drive and Hard drive and processor are ok?
Also, I'm assuming I should hook up keyboard and mouse now to mobo next time I turn on?
What do I need to do with BIOS or anytihng?
sorry first time here, but feel I'm getting somewhere. Anything I should be aware of not to screw up?
THANKS THANKS THANKS for all your help, I couldn't have got this far without you

You can connect the DVD Drive to the other connector on the IDE data cable (also, set the DVD jumper to cable select), turn on the computer and see if it shows up.

Other than what it said nothing else happened. I don't know if it showed up or not? It had a different screen that time than before I had HD and DVD hooked up though.
What does this mean? (also, set the DVD jumper to cable select), turn on the computer and see if it shows up.
I have both the dvd and hard drive connected to the IDE cable (it ends with the hard drive and DVD drive is in middle connector) This was kinda hard to do mind you, but I got it without too much of a strain on the cable. I obviously have this plugged into the mobo.
I also have the 1x4 connector from PS going to each of these DVD and HD and they are connected.
Can I assume my hd and DVD are working? What is my next step? Please see 2nd paragraph above as I'm not sure what that means exactly.
Thanks
