Mobo w o Integrated Graphics
I saw this mobo on newegg,

and thought I would ask here before buying it. What exactly does no integrated graphics mean? I can still load the BIOS but not an OS? What if my graphics card needs a driver? I can't do ANYTHING other than BIOS w/o some sort of graphics card correct?

no intergrated graphics means no onboard video.....means you need a video card...

I'm planning on buying a discrete card but my question was if something were do wrong with the discrete card would I be able to load windows to fix it?
The BIOS i'm assuming would still load but idk...

If you have a video card, and something happens to it, then you will need a different video card to see anything, incuding the bios.
The motherboard will have no connections for a monitor.

So the rule of thumb would be to avoid mobos w/o integrated graphics? I do have an old 7600 i could throw in if something went wrong...
Is it becoming more common to purchase these mobos w/o integrated graphics for a backup?

If you have a backup card to use in case of a problem, then don't worry about it. I don't think anyone really buys a board with graphics just for backup. We generally recommend boards with graphics for basic use, office type machines.

Ok thanks guys, Its just been my experience that almost all boards had integrated graphics as a bare minimum. I'll prolly get one of the GeForce GTX series cards do go on this board.
I already have a 9600GT and a 7600GT on an old machine so i'm fine as far as backups go.

I dont think this is important enough to start a new thread so while we're on the subject, Is there any drawback to using a mobo with integrated graphics when you plan to use a video card? I tend to filter them out of my newegg searches simply because there will be unused chips on the board...

Higher end chipsets don't include video onboard, for example the P45, so if you want a high end gaming machine or workstation then you might not want to go with a motherboard that has onboard video.

Does that mean integrated graphics do not use a GPU and video memory like a videocard? Is it correct to say that the integrated uses the CPU and system RAM for the video?

The reason some go with boards with onboard video is they are smaller in size (mATX) and dont need a video card and can be used in smaller form factor builds...like stated for small home or office builds that dont need larger amounts of GPU power...like a net surfer...
Gaming builds and photo editing builds can generally make use of a powerful video card and this is the reason for larger boards without onboard video (ATX) in a build...
It all depends on what you intend to do with the build....alot of times some will use a good board with onboard for a simple HTPC (media server) build....
either board will work fine but you will need video power to see anything on the monitor and to access the BIOS...whether it's onboard or a stand alone video card....
Using a board with onboard video as a back up option is not really a bad idea but just keep in mind the onboard is no where near as powerful as the standalone card will be so games wont play on the onboard as they would on a video card...
My main rig has onboard Intel 1300 video and it is very basic but I have a GTX-275 installed...
I picked the board (Asus P5E-VM HDMI) for the size and its options...although I would never use the onboard video it is there if the need should present itself but it wont handle anything more that browsing the web...

Onboard video is in the chipset itself currently...and it shares the ram installed in the rig itself...
it does use CPU cycles as well...when a video card is installed it is disabled and uses nothing...

Onboard video can handle a lot more than just web browsing. It can handle multimedia fine and can even handle basic gaming.
