No, you don't have to use Raid in order to use a SATA drive. As far as using your IDE as a slave, I presume you have an IDE port on the motherboard or controller card. If not, there are IDE to SATA adapters. You would have to either use cable select to use it as a slave, or set the jumpers to the slave position. You would also need to change your bios I think in order for it to boot later than the SATA. As far as the BSOD, I don't know. It might be a problem with your formatting or installation of Windows. We'll see what someone else comes up with.
