audio cable to optical drive
What's the point of the audio cable to the optical drive? Mine didn't come with one and I'm kinda wondering if I should email tech support and ask for a replacement. Is it important?
EDIT: It's SATA. Never mind.

I've always wondered the same thing. I've never hooked up the cable.

As long as you are using an 80wire IDE cable or a SATA cable the audio cable is not required.

It's one of those old hold-overs that manufacturers haven't bothered to start removing.

yeah,
in the good olde days of cdrom/dvdrom, there was a headphone jack in the front of the drive, the audio cable supplies the sound to this jack.
this went away when dvdburner came around.

Actually it was to get analog sound from the drive to the sound card - before the days of operating systems that were digital audio capable.

I never knew that OS's today didn't need them, but I did know that they were for audio from the deck. My old Gateway had an audio cable on one drive, but not the other thus I couldn't play from that one and get any sound.
