Scrap RAID Controller
A few years ago I build a RAID 5 system for my PC around this 3ware controller and four 320GB WD drives. I've had several drive failures and several WD RMA's, but luckily I never lost any data. It scared me so much that I started keeping an extra drive in reserve to pop in when the next one fails. Now that all the drives are out of Warranty, I'd like to start migrating to a more reliable configuration. I thought about scrapping the 3ware controller, and just doing RAID 1 with two 1TB drives connected directly to the mobo (which only has 2 SATA ports). Or maybe I'll stick with the controller and try to find more reliable drives. So my questions are:
1. Is any drive suitable for RAID, or should I look for something in particular?
2. Do the drives need to be identical, or can I start replacing future failed drives with another drive brand?
3. Can anyone recommend a reliable SATA hard drive to use?
4. Should I scrap my $300 3ware controller?

Scrap RAID Controller
1. Yes, but RAID-duty drives are best.
2. Identical drives are more stable, but not strictly necessary.
3. Honestly, I recommend WD RE-series drives.
4. Only if you think it's defective - I use Adaptec controllers myself.
