I searched and found the DougKnox.com page solution for my failing/or no longer recognized DVD hardware in Windows XP - downloaded and installed the recommended solution - and my DVD worked again! No need to traipse off to the stores and pay my money and then figure out how to install it in my desktop. Here is the solution used: XP_CD-DVD-Fix.exe - Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer Thanks to all who keep posting answers to those of us in need!
