Seagate ST3250410AS HDD
Looks like its my turn. I bought a Seagate 7200.10 HDD almost a year ago. This morning, the mouse quit and the screen locked up. After running many diagnostics including Seagates, it looks like the drive has errors and bad sectors.
The drive is still under warranty and I have a few questions for those that have gone through this same experience.
Can I use Acronis to back up this drive and save everything for later installation on a new HDD?
Has Seagate taken care of the problem or will I get an exchange drive that could possibly have the same problems?
TIA

I had the exact same thing happen to my grandson's machine with that exact drive. I upgraded it to a WD Black and haven't even taken the RMA replacement out of the bag yet.
In order to get a good clone or image, you will probably have to run Spinrite on it first.

I will run Spinrite on it first.
I take your answer as that Seagate hasn't fixed the problem yet.
I wanted to back up my complete drive. How do I get it saved to DVDs?

Well, Acronis can bust up an image into DVD-sized chunks, but how much data are we talking here?
I don't KNOW if the problem is fixed - I haven't checked the replacement drive. It does have a refurb sticker on it.

Seagate ST3250410AS HDD
If I remember correctly, the amount of the info was 21.5 gig.
I hate to have to buy another HDD. At the same time I don't want to go through this again either. I do have a 250g Samsung SATA drive here that checks out great. I guess I have to make a decision between the lesser of two evils.
I didn't see the option to break up the DVD in chunks but then I could have skipped right over it.
Thanks for the info and help g. It is always appreciated.

Spinrite it and then clone it to the Samsung and see what you get. I'm guessing you would need 4 to 5 DVD's to image it.

Its going through Spinrite as we speak. I'll have to take another look at Acronis to see what I missed.
I don't think Seagate's tool for transferring to a new HDD would work. I still have that from when I bought the new drive.

Boot with the Acronis CD and use the clone function.

My bad g. I was going to use the trial version so I don't have the cd. I think I'll add the new drive and clone to that instead of using dvds.

Thanks again for all the help glc. I cloned the Seagate to the Samsung for now. I'll wipe the Seagate as per their instructions and wait for the refurbished one to come in. I don't know how good a Samsung is, but I'll give it a long test.
I'll also purchase Acronis True Image because it has so many features I will need.
