installing large sata hard drive in XP

I've just ordered a 1 tb hard drive to replace my 200 gb drive in my Compaq (? sr1750n ?) about 3 yr old, running Windows XP Home....I don't recall which XP version was original, but its 2.5 yr old. It has 4 gb ram (upgrade) and a scsi card in it, otherwise stock.
My question is whether there is a way to determine whether Windows will recognize the size of the hard drive, and if not, what to do about it.
Also, I realize I don't really know where to start - is there a primer somewhere to identify the steps necessary? What I want to do is to clone the existing 200 gb drive onto the new hard drive (both are sata) and to then install the 1 tb drive as the primary drive.
Also, I've never worked with SATA before - but I did buy a external Sata connnector kit or module to assist.... and I do own a recent copy of Acronis True Image. But I've not used any of this before - its been yrs since I cloned & installed a hard drive - back in the days of Windows 95!
So, to sum up the questions...
1. will any version of XP see the drive? If not, what to do?
2. any primer identifying steps to clone the larger drive? - using Acronis or WD software.
3. Tips on using sata connector kit, & how to physically connect Sata cables to sata drive

All help sincerely appreciated ... I'm not going to start this project until I have a good understanding of what I'm getting into and how to proceed!

1. You need SP1a or later. If it recognizes a 200gb drive, it's new enough.
3. SATA connectors are foolproof - the smaller connector is data and the larger connector is power.
2. Connect the drive, boot with the Acronis CD, clone it. Remove the old drive and insert the new one.

GLC,
thanks.
Question: when I clone the orig hard drive, will the d: as well as c: partitions be copied? Or, must I do an additional step to clone the d: drive.
Also, as regards partitions, I was thinking of doing 1 at 600 gb, one at 20 gb for the D: drive copying the boot Windows Compaq stuff, and balance at 300+ as available.
Will I be able to specify the D: drive be copied into the 20 gb partition?

Thanks.

You should be able to position and size the partitions if you use the expert mode.

Thanks GLC. [copying onto a WD 1 tb drive, XPsp3, and Acronis vers 11 on Compaq sr1750nx, 4 gb ram] But when I set out to do what I last described, copying the C: and D: drives as partitions, and creating a partition for balance of drive, I was unable to create the 3rd partition. The Acronis software called it an "unallocated " area and did not give me opportunity to create a 3rd partition.

I was attempting to create a 550 gb partition, a 22 gb partition for the D drive reserve area set up by Compaq for the original OS, and a 300+ gb third partition.

Should I have gone at this differently? I'm not clear on how to set up the "logical" areas, and Acronis did not offer any choices even in the manual mode to do so. (I'm using Acronis TT version 11).

Thanks!

You can complete the job using Windows disk management - just right click on the unallocated area and create a partition.

thanks...but I've already accepted/completed the one large partition (900+ gb) and one mini (22 gb). Is there a way to modify the existing large partition, de-allocating 300 gb, w/o starting all over?

Thanks.

Not without some partition resizing software.

I used the EZ partition manager to re-size the cloned hard drive, which I installled. Then I re=sized again to take the unallocated area - I now have approx 550 gb C drv, 12 gb D: drv, and 380 GB E: drv. That part appears to have worked well.

However, in the process, my CD/DVD drv, formerly E:, has disappeared. I ran the CD gone software again to no avail. The optical drv does not show in Device Manager or in the MyComputer display.
In checking the device manager, there are no uninstalled markings, but it does sshow an Unknown listing, which is for the primary and secondary ide and channels. Is this significant?

Specs: running a Compaq sr1750nx with 4 gb Kingston ram, Windows XP Home, sp3, now a Hitachi 1 tb hddrv, Samsung 22" lcd monitor, Buffalo 500 ext hd bakup, AltLansg powerd sprkrs.

Hope you can help!

If it's an IDE DVD drive, it's not going to be seen if the IDE channels are flagged in device manager. Reinstall the chipset drivers.

I was unsuccessful in getting the pci ide drivers to work - they remain unknown...

I did try to rollback, but no driver was saved. I then uninstalled the pci controller and pci channels after downloading the software. The software drivers loaded on the restart , manually, but did not "take"....and after a restart remained in the unknown designation of device manager. My info on this 1750 desktop is that the chipset is ATI Radeon Xprs 200....so the chipset should have been installed.

I am going to check the cabling....perhaps was dislodged earlier? I've no other explanations....

Things are getting curiouser and curiouser!

It was a cable disconnect, after all - BUT - even after connections, the ide channels/controller are still shown in the Device Manager as Unknown devices. They are not flagged as uninstalled or problems - just as unknow. the drivers for each are installed apparently. I don't really know what to make of this....(perhaps leave well enough alone?).

Any comment?

Disconnect the IDE cables from the motherboard, fire it up, delete the IDE channels and controllers in device manager, and reboot. If they come back and install properly, then shut down and reconnect the cables.

Usually when they show up as "unknown", the chipset drivers aren't properly installed.

I disconnected the (1) IDE cable and followed the reboot instructions - tho the system went thru an install apparently - the ide devices still show Unknown in the device manager.

Is there something I can do to "force" the installation of the correct drivers? I had previoiusly downloaded them as suggested.

Situation presently is that the IDE drivers continue to show up in the "unknown" tab of Device Manager, but the DVD is working ok. So I proceeded to install the video card pci/e ... an EVGA GeForce 8500GT with its drivers. While the video card is working satisfactorily, I get the following error message upon each bootup:

"The ATI Control Panel failed to initialize b/c no ATI dvr is installed, or ATI drivers not working properly. The ATI control panel will now exit."

I am guessing this is from the earlier re-install of the ATI chipset dvrs? These did not install properly it seems - but I've no clue as to how to correct the situation since I've already uninstalled and (attempted the) re-installation of the drivers.

Any ideas???
