Is my Ext HDD dead
I made a boo-boo and went 3 months without a backup (changed my passwrod and confused Roxio Backup). No problem, run a backup and schedule more.
My 60Gb backup took 2 days (OK I gave up after a day). Installed new USB 2.0 cable on my 6 month old 300Gb WD External Drive. No joy. Reformatted Drive. No joy.
I lillte quicken file goes in seconds. A big file takes days. I installed my old 160Gb Ext Maxtor and it took the 60Gb in 90 minutes.
Is my 300Gb Ext WD drive toast or is their a plan C?

Run WD's DLG Diagnostics for Windows on it.
A word to the wise - with external drives, the internal interface card is a high failure item - this is why we recommend building your own external drive with a separate housing and drive, even thouh it costs more when you get done.

Data Life Guard Quick check reports OK.
DLG Thorough Check says it will take 388 hours to test the drive. Houston we have aproblem!

Even USB 2.0 is tons faster than its predecessor, it still is a lot slower than IDE, SATA, ESATA etc. Of course the size of the drive, the processor of the computer etc. affect the speed, and the estimate given to you by lifeguard is just that an estimate, I don't think that it should be that slow.

Did you do the "quick test" first? 'cause if that fails, you have your answer, and you'll save 387 hours. I'm guessing you've got dead drive electronics (which is what the quick test checks for).

It took about an hour to report "Too many bad sectors".
I hate throwing stuff away but prob not worth putting a new harddrive in a one year old WD 500Gb Ext HDD?
Answered my own quesion...$87 for a 500Gb EHDD at Office Depot.
It is inbound to the roundfile.

I'll second that recommendation. Makes it really easy to replace/upgrade the actual harddrive yourself down the road, and separates the two possible points of failure (the enclosure/USB interface, and the actual drive).
