hard drive not reading correctly

So I know that there is a thread about this, that's how I found this format. However, this a huge capacity error in my opinion.

I have a ASUS laptop, Vista with SP2, my internal hd is suppose to be 320gb. 4gb of RAM.
But this is about the external my aunt just sent me. We got it for her for Christmas, however she didn't like that it wasn't portable. It is a WD 750 gb or 640 gb, I can not really remember. However my computer is saying that it is: 49.1 gb. How can this be?

hard drive not reading correctly

Two possibilities.

Someone formatted and partitioned the drive and you're looking at the first partition.
Remove the partition and reformat the drive, that should give you the full space back.
If a third party program was used you may need to zero out the drive but try using Disk Management first.

The second is that either the drive or the enclosure is malfunctioning in which case RMA it.
