Configuration advise
I need some help in configuring a new machine. My old one is still functional and speedy after 5 years. I wouldn't change if it weren't for the fact that my disk arrays are SCSI very expensive and very small for what I need, AGP video just doesn't cut it and the 2 GB of memory is just not enough, the dual Xeon processors are as good as new. I handle very large clips files and 3d Graphics. So the new configuration is:
Main Board:
Super micro C7X58
Intel DX58SO
Processor:
Intel i7
Case:
Super micro 743T-645B
Memory:
DDR3 1066 (8 GB) 2 sets of 4GB
Graphics Card:
nVida GTX260
nVida GX2 9800
Hard Drive:
Seagate ST31000333AS 1TB drives (6)
There are two problems here, First I need a DVD drive and I don't want to use a SATA port;
Second, is that I'd really like six drives in a RAID 5 array but I don't want to run my operating system from the RAID.
What I'd like to do is: have a DVD drive (internal) running from a usb or fire wire port, have a small drive to run my operating system and page files leaving me 5 SATA ports open for a RAID 5 array with five 1 TB disks.
Is it possible and who's DVD drive should I get? Second Question, are there any improvements I can make to the configuration. This machine has to last at least five years!

Are you trying to run the raid array from the motherboard? Would probably be better getting an actual raid card. That would also free up the sata ports.
I would still get a sata dvd drive. Look at lite-on, LG, or asus. If you don't get a raid card, you can get a pci-sata card.
I would get a small drive just for the os. Look at a cheap western digital drive.
I would change those seagates to western digital drives. Seagate had some problems a few months ago, and they changed their warranty to 3 years. WD caviar black drives have a 5 year warranty.
Also, I believe for graphics, most recommend ati video cards.
