After mod to FirePro V8700 and OC CPU@3500, GPU@950, GDDR5@1150

Resolution 1280x1024

not bad for a $99 card...

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

thanks, good tip, I opened the bike, it works (it's incredible how they screw things on purpose...)

with wireframe, 4670 unmodded is giving me around 34 fps, rotating the camera around the target
hit 5 for smooth shade, get 16 fps

with modded 4670, I get 52 fps in wireframe and 16.6 fps in smooth shaded

*****************

I launched the island benchmark again, with 1280x1024 resolution
I got 6 to 9.7 fps on unmodded 4670, and 5.9 to 9.6 fps on modded 4670, so, apart from the strange 0.1 lower for modded, resolution was close enough to not matter: now it's a bit better on unmodded, no change on modded

*****************

NOW, let's see if I can create yet another benchmark, and witness the more than probable confusion that will now ensue...

let's call it TextBench, and place it in RapidShare:
http://rapidshare.com/files/24602245...Bench.zip.html

get a simple nurbs mountain, decorate it with paint-effect palm trees, and put some bevel text in front, adding up to a total of 700K poligons
then, texture the island with high-res photo, and the text with some noise from a jpg, and include some camera movement so we all see the same
in the end, it's similar to the original island, but somehow the file is 1/50th of the size

if you want to use it:
* download zip
* extract it to a local drive, it will create a whole project subdir tree
* set 1280x1024 resolution
* open maya
* if you don't see it already, get the fps indicator: display > heads up display > frame rate
* file > project > set > look for the TextBench directory that came out of the zip
* file > open scene > TextBench.mb
* you should see a mountain with some dry terrain texture
* press play, and look for the fps

now, as the camera movement is more subtle, we can only look at the minimum fps, after taking out outliers

my results so far:
4670 - mod 8.603 - Q6600@3GHz --> 11.0 fps
4670 - unmodded - Q6600@3GHz --> 8.9 fps

hmmm...well i have something to say...

i dont know much open gl business but the first time i saw someone rave and show the power of opengl was in aftereffect tutorial ...the guy had all sorts of smokes effect and light effect in the scene but not much other geometry ..an he was like "look even after applying so much effect i am still able to easily navigate through the scene ...ahhh the power of open gl card.!!"..

mostly i model or animate yet i havent seen much difference, infect , i once ran on wrongly modded driver for month without knowing or realizing ....

so i think either we r looking at wrong things or we are expecting much .....

I have a Quadro FX 570, FX1800, FX 380, FX580 , FirePro V3750 and FireV5700 for testing.

I had run SPECapc Maya 6.5 benchmark on Maya 2010. Except that, ı have no idea how to run Maya.

Therefore, where do I see the fps ?

the scene seems quite workable VGA-wise, but it's an excruciating pain for the CPU... which is not helped by the fact that maya is only using one core

by the way: you didn't include the .jpg and .tga files in the zip, so it didn't display those textures

(and yes: I didn't even bother to install the new drivers on the 3870, in fact I'm not using maya at all lately, it's FORTRAN that's trying to pay the bills)
i get 15-22 fps in win7, but 22 in specviewperf. I guess this benchmark doesn't reflect true viewport performance.

NormanBates 10x a lot . I'v got the same results with the textures on the scene. ( 5-14 fps win7 build 7201 x64) . So I will keep my 9800GTX for a while.
Just last question. Do you think a Quadro FX 580 will get better fps or is just the CPU fault. I do a lot of modeling in maya. What do you think is better for me a modded HD4xxx under xp maybe near future win7 or Quadro FX 580 wich is a real Quadro unde xp\win7 (vista sucks)\linux even OSX . Is there a huge differences between Quadro FX 580 or modded HD4xxx in normal scene like a complex caracter or something like that without paint effects & textures just a lot of smooth mesh, nurbs etc?I just saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y99mD_A1uug . There is a huge diferences between HD4850 & V3750. Do you think is the same for maya? I think the Quadro FX 580 is better then V3750 because it has more memory . So who has the bigest advantages? The modded HD4xxx or the Quadro?
Anyone?

Could someone test a modded card with this scene. I beg you! Is an island from a tutorial. The scene is very heavy. I'v got around 5 fps on my 9800GTX . So i'm very curious on an modded HD4770\HD4850\HD4870 how many fps do you get .

right, a few questions.

I have 2x 4770 running in crossfire atm, so to softmod them to V8700 i have to install the firepro drivers and then mod the script like clint said above?

would they still be able to run in crossfire?

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

from the bottom of page 6 and on, I'd guess

plus here are the instructions for the old mods (which won't work on any HD4xxx card)
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread....highlight=lazy

the new drivers come already modded, sometimes; in other ocassions, there's a script, and the instructions above should work

NormanBates

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

Sorry for late reply.

Yes, as NormanBates says, the patchscript used is in that thread. You need to modify that script a bit:

1.
I used Dst1_12 line which is eqvivalent to the HD 4870 card. The line looks like this:
Code:
Dst1_12 = 0F B7 85 FE FE FF FF 66 25 00 00 66 0D 56 94 66 89 85 FE FE FF FF EB 04
Edit it to reflect the HD 4770 hardware-ID (change "56" to "B3", which will translate to a hardware-ID of 94B3 (reads from right to left)):
Code:
Dst1_12 = 0F B7 85 FE FE FF FF 66 25 00 00 66 0D B3 94 66 89 85 FE FE FF FF EB 04

2.
As allways when softmodding you also need to change hardware-ID in drivers .inf to reflect your card:

In CX_79796.inf find this line:
Code:
"ATI FirePro V8700 (FireGL)" = ati2mtag_R7XGL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9440
Edit it to reflect HD 4770 hardware-ID:
Code:
"ATI FirePro V8700 (FireGL)" = ati2mtag_R7XGL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_94B3
3.
Look for tutorial on how to patch this driver with Rivatuner and then use Gellmars (edited) script to do so.

Some words about "why this necessary". In previous driver's version (exactly in 8.301.0.0) acceleration in maya could be enabled only after activation Maya-compatibles from list. I think it still the same old song =).

I hope ATi will fix the drivers. I think i will buy a cheap 8800GT and bios mod the card if ATi will not fix the drivers. Same happen on XP 32 & 64 take a look on page 3 on this thread and you'll see what is going on. Mental ray & maya software is optimized for CPU . A real FirePro V5700 give the same score as a regular radeon. So is not win7/xp/64&32 fault or yours, is ATi . To bad.

Maryus3D

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

Hallo
I see there is some progress with the drivers, I just tested a laptop with 2600 hd card.
This was on windows xp (server 2003 to be precise), driver 8.603. I modded the driver using device id 958f.

In .inf I used the string: "ATI Mobility FireGL V5600"

Display Properties -> Adapter tab shows: "ATI Mobility FireGL Graphics Processor (0x958F)"

But I installed the classic control panel and it says (in Details tab):
"Device ID 9581" (this is the original device id)

The specview result for maya-02 is 96.14.

The bike.ma on latest maya 2009 sp1a is
smooth shade: 8.5 - 11 fps
wireframe : ~30 fps
high quality: 2.5 fps

I tried also running specapc for maya 2009 and it could not run a complete run.. Also there are artifacts appearing in the hands scene. (I know these are high polygon count models, if that has to do with anything). Does anyone else notices these? All features though, like overlay seem to be there, sculpting works fine and some of my simple scenes work allright, till now i have been using it for 2-3 days (not very intensively though).

Has anyone tried the newer driver?
I would love to beta test ATIFuse, i have a clean install and spare room for vista/win 7 also.

AFAIK control panel and/or CCC are responsible for applying the settings in ATI driver, it was called 'autodection' or something like that. Should I try with id 958C or install CCC ? I noticed that specview was a little jerky before installing the control panel (maybe this was a placebo effect though..)

wooowwww very bad news for maya users. A modded 8800 ultra gave 50 fps for the bike and a Quadro FX 580 gave 50 fps for both scenes. To bad. A don't think is your fault or radeon card fault. I think the stupid problem is the lack of RAM on Win7
OS consumes 400 MB itself + maya 2009 unlim without scene 260MB + rendering on 1280*1024 = hmmmm, my 2GB were out and the swapping began. I will try XP64, it consumes 200MB itself (that's my modded OS ) Also I am trying to get a render internal dump for real V8700! It may work well with maya. If so, we solve our problems!

PS: I definitely need a new rig And I know that because I can't run the upcoming SolidWorks 2010 ( So I have to open a donation account for ATIFuse despite of this is my hobby

PS: Your GPU-Z shows 0x9515, and this is weird. V7700 should be 0x9511 (like shown in ATI Feature Test output), HD3850 - 0x9505. And 0x9515 = 0x9505 | 0x9511, that's weirdo

FireGL CP info also show 9515 instead of 9511

but.. CCC tells me valid ID info (no shot in this case, just believe me).

As judged by my own test-scene, overall performance in Maya is still on radeons opengl driver level . May be auto-detection for OGLCapabilities not work?

hmmm...well i have something to say...

i dont know much open gl business but the first time i saw someone rave and show the power of opengl was in aftereffect tutorial ...the guy had all sorts of smokes effect and light effect in the scene but not much other geometry ..an he was like "look even after applying so much effect i am still able to easily navigate through the scene ...ahhh the power of open gl card.!!"..

mostly i model or animate yet i havent seen much difference, infect , i once ran on wrongly modded driver for month without knowing or realizing ....

so i think either we r looking at wrong things or we are expecting much .....

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

Hi all,

I am new to moding cards and I need some help if anyone is kind enough.

I have a ATI radeon 4870 card and want to mod it to firpro card. I see all forms talking about these patch scripts that need to be edited but I am confused about how and where to edit them. Can someone write a step by step on the complete mod process? (Or direct me to where one is)

Like what drivers to download what to use to mod the scripts where to mod them and all that?

I've been stressing over doing this forever and can't seem to figure out how to start.

Thank so much if you can help me out!

Best,

Dan

About you are saying : ,,Maya does not benefit from a modded ATI card" it doesn't benefit from a real FirePro V5700 you can think that a modded HD4670 is less efficient. Maybe a Quadro FX 580 is the perfect cheap solution for maya or you can try mod you card again and test with the bike or textbench if you are kind. BTW theoretically a modded 8800 ultra should give more fps on the bike but not bad after all .

Fragmichnicht how can you get 50 fps without moding you card? I'v got 12-13 and the ultra 14 and a real FirePro V5700 only 17. Test with the all scenes textbecnh and the bike. My island mayascene2 is to heavy for all the cards .

It is really annoying that Maya does not benefit from a modded ATI card. I had high hopes of such a modded card.
I have set the Autodesk Maya settings via control panel. Therefore I have downloaded the original Nvidia Quadro Drivers a year ago and force my Win Xp 64 Bit to install those Drivers. After that I have saved the setting file and replaced this file later in a normal Geforce Driver Installation. That's all the magic and nothing new, you can read that in a lot of forum threads in many CG forums.

It seems to work for maya at least, but some programs have problems, the driver hangs the whole system. Here, the system hangs on one of the specviewperf tests (can't remember now which particular one was), and when I run a demo called 'planet risk'.
Maya though, seems stable so far .. in xp32 maybe the situation is better? I don't have time to test it now, it's exams time here and i already have some scenes that need more than 3gb ram to run (so i need a 64 bit os).. sigh ..

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

Hello ultrabitch,

I am sorry, but it looks to me that the quadro softmod doesn't work for Maya. Look at my results with a 8800GT. It is nearly the same as yours with a 8800 Ultra and I don't use any softmod. I am just using the nvidia settings for Autodesk Maya and have no problems, hangs or what ever.

Fragmichnicht

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

Fragmichnicht, I see what you mean, these results are pretty close. Can you also test wireframe performance and the bike.ma scene with smooth shading and wireframe as well?

If I find some time (I have to study really hard now), i'll test unmodded xp64 and see how it goes. (btw, with the mod i get opengl overlays, stereo and the profiles correctly)

Also can you explain how you set maya settings? Do you set them via control panel (if yes, what driver version are you using?)

ultrabitch

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

I think that one will have a quite different effect, post6800 softquadro kills opengl...

NormanBates

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

ok, in xp x64, this time with modded driver (styler script - drv182.08) and nvstrap

bike.ma
smooth shaded: 49-50 fps
wireframe: 79-81 fps

mayascene2.ma
smooth shaded: 8.3 -12.8 fps
wireframe: 18.3 - 26.2 fps

*I have to enable manually maya profile from nvidia control panel, if i don't anything that uses opengl crashes. Crearly these results show that this mod works for maya. Moreover specviewperf is obsolete / fake (specviewperf maya is ~100 with maya profile enabled). I think both vendors are using profiles for this benchmark (like they are using in almost every other major app / game).

O my god i can't believe it the nvidia cards are still moddable for OpenGL. Congratulation ultrabitch you have some Quadro performances over there same performance as a Quadro FX 580. From now on I'll never trust specview. I hope I can mod my 9800GTX .

Here is the proof :

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/w...phics,119.html

There is no benchmark fo newer Maya versions, so no one knows for sure which card is better.

It looks for your purposes FX580 ( or if you have money, FX1800 ) would be enough.

khogan112

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

I agree with you khogan112 but the specview's scenes for maya is very low detailed, low poly & other. When I open thoes scene with the werewolf, the squid or something like that and other scenes I have over 40-50 fps with my 9800GTX. In my opinion it doesn't matter who give the higher fps when is over 30 fps. In heavy scene like that bike or textbench even my island, nvidia has better resaults you saw it with your eyes . And if you look closely on the score 7.07 it says Nvidia FireGL V5600 . By the way I don't think Quadro FX 5600>Quadro FX 4800 and FirePro V8700 < FireGL V7700 . Maybe Tom is just making fun of us . Any way thanks a lot khogan112 for the bechmarks it means a lot for me. You to NormanBates thanks both of you.

Maryus3D

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

Fantastic!!! khogan112 you do the right things with the bike and the mountain textbench . I did the same on my 9800GTX and it gave me the same fps as the V5700. Contrary specview says about maya: nvidia sucks and ATi rullz, in real world bench, nVidia is the best choise. At least for maya. Beleve me I'm not an ATi fanboy or nvidia fanboy or Apple fanboy, I'm a maya fanboy and I want to do my work fast and smooth . Hope I'll get a FX580 and hackintosh it to get even more performance (nativ OpenGL) .

Over all greate job khogan112 and NormanBates realy greate job. By the way I have a 22" monitor at 1680x1050 , I don't think the rezolution affects maya and the video card to much. It's a shame that a 9800GTX=V5700 in maya, think about the price\performance range.

Maryus3D

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

I had repeated the tests as usual for FX570, and got respactable figures, higher than FirePro v5700. Then repeated tests with Quadro FX580, and my jaw dropped. Around 50 fps for both scenes. At first I thought, "OK a two to three fold increase is normal from 256MB DDR2 FX 570(:=8500GT) to 512MB DDR3 FX580( := 9500GT)". Then I recognized I was doing something wrong.

Last night I did not sleep until dawn, so it may be I have got a block that may lead to the result that I might not be able to repeat the same steps again.

So I recorded my tests with Fşashback's software : http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/bbflashback/download.aspx

Here is the 130 MB big, 4:30 minute long file. Taken at 1280x1024 resolution, GDI 24 frames per second quality.

NormanBates and Maryus3D, please look at it, and tell me if I am missing anything or not.

if you want to use it:
* download zip
* extract it to a local drive, it will create a whole project subdir tree
* set 1280x1024 resolution
* open maya
* if you don't see it already, get the fps indicator: display > heads up display > frame rate
* file > project > set > look for the TextBench directory that came out of the zip
* file > open scene > TextBench.mb
* you should see a mountain with some dry terrain texture
* press play, and look for the fps

now, as the camera movement is more subtle, we can only look at the minimum fps, after taking out outliers

my results so far:
4670 - mod 8.603 - Q6600@3GHz --> 11.0 fps
4670 - unmodded - Q6600@3GHz --> 8.9 fps
Bike scene : Do not know if I did it correctly, I zoomend in out, rotated etc by
pressing ALt + mouse left button, ALT + mouse middle button etc first with as it came
then went to Shade->Wireframe

FirePro v5700 - 8.603 - E8400@3.6 GHz --> 20.8 fps in smooth shade
FirePro v5700 - 8.603 - E8400@3.6 GHz --> 69 fps in wireframe

FirePro v5700 - 8.603 - E8400@3.0 GHz --> 17.4 fps in smooth shade,
FirePro v5700 - 8.603 - E8400@3.0 GHz --> 57.4 fps in wireframe

I opened a few files and they gave me around 50 to 60 fps values. Then I found this file under Textbench->Textbech->scenes->textbench.mb and
It gives me different values where I set the project directory.

FirePro v5700 - 8.603 - E8400@3.6 GHz --> 13.3 fps ( pd = textbench ) , 15.1 fps ( pd=textbench->textbench)

FirePro v5700 - 8.603 - E8400@3.0 GHz --> 11.1 fps ( pd = textbench ) , 13 fps ( pd=textbench->textbench)

khogan112

record the fps for every second or frame and output it to a standard file so that we can share the results with ease.

It is awkward to look to the fps and remember the lowest and highest fps.

Will try that out tomorrow.

thanks, good tip, I opened the bike, it works (it's incredible how they screw things on purpose...)

hit 5 for smooth shade, get 16 fps

with modded 4670, I get 52 fps in wireframe and 16.6 fps in smooth shaded

* download zip
* extract it to a local drive, it will create a whole project subdir tree
* set 1280x1024 resolution
* open maya
* if you don't see it already, get the fps indicator: display > heads up display > frame rate
* file > project > set > look for the TextBench directory that came out of the zip
* file > open scene > TextBench.mb
* you should see a mountain with some dry terrain texture
* press play, and look for the fps

now, as the camera movement is more subtle, we can only look at the minimum fps, after taking out outliers

my results so far:
4670 - mod 8.603 - Q6600@3GHz --> 11.0 fps
4670 - unmodded - Q6600@3GHz --> 8.9 fps

yes, it's dependent on resolution

I ran it at 1280x800 on the 3870, and 1400x1050 on the 4670

I'll rerun the 4670 at 1280x1024 this afternoon, and test the byke benchmark too (if it doesn't have some camera animation, I'll add it and post the updated benchmark: the free camera movement island benchmark was clearly inconsistent)

about the island benchmark: I didn't look closely at it, but I don't think the geometry is broken, it's just a bit special (lots of paint effects, a couple of big nurbs, and some relatively simple polygon objects), but I guess it's not an extremely uncommon mix, and if that's what you're using then that's what you want to test

I'll look at the byke scene, and see if I can contribute with some other complex scene... and maybe we should start a new thread for this "real world maya benchmarking" stuff, in some part of this forum that is not rivatuner-specific and where newbies can post

SPECviewperf10 Maya viewset is for Maya 6.5 .... Maya is currently in version 2009. A lot of things have changed since the viewperf10 benchmark has been developed.

I am sure that if any of you install Maya 6.5, then they will get the same performance in the viewperf10 viewset.

Any viewset was using the capabilities of the most current version of respective software.

Now SEPC viewperf10 shows how much the VGA cards have improved respective to its benchmark configurations : and it is doing it well. That is why SPEC figures is published and accepted as de facto standard. but it has reached a point where it is becoming obsolote and useless.

Not only have the cards improved, but also the OpenGL standard has evolved, and the tested software have evolved too : both in terms of performance and capabilities. A lot of software have gone better in DX.

I suspect they got much better in DX10 capabilities, however as far as I can see, everybody is sticiking to their XP s in this forum - thefre is no softmod for Vista too, so we can never be sure of that.

That was the reason I was asking for you to contribute to SPEC test development efforts.

Results from the mayascene2.m:

7.1 to 11.8 FPS on 4770 unmodded cat 9.6, CPU@3.5GHz, GFX@800/850
7.7 to 13.4 FPS on 4770 firepromod 8.603, CPU@3.5GHz, GFX@800/850

No difference in FPS when I OC the GFX to 950/1150MHz in both unmodded and modded driver.

Test with both scenes . The mayascene2.ma (island) will tell you if the card is 100% modded. Looks like a real V5700 is better then a modded HD4670.

7.1 to 12.3 on a "real" FirePro V5700, Driver 8.603, E8400@3GHz
5.5 to 8.7 fps on 4670 unmodded cat 9.5, Q6600@3GHz
6.0 to 9.7 fps on 4670 firepromod 8.603, Q6600@3GHz

The FX580 give better score overall
10.8 to 15.6 fps on Quadro FX580 E8400@3GHz

Nice to see that we are going into depth with the analysis of the performance.

I've got some spare time tonight and I'm thinking about doing some more benches, comparing results from a stock card and one with a different bios that allows heavy overclocking. I thought that could shed some light on the value of overclocking the HD4770 in terms of professional performance.

Now, what benchmarks should I run? Any suggestions much appreciated.

BTW: Don't forget about this http://rapidshare.com/files/249160829/bike.rar anyone please .

I had tested with a real FirePro V5700 I have.

Getting curious, I repeated the tests with the real FirePro V3750 I also have.
The maxiumum occurs around frame 130 and the minumum around frame 215.

7.1 to 12.3 on a "real" FirePro V3750, Driver 8.603, E8400@3GHz
8.5 to 14.6 on a "real" FirePro V5700, Driver 8.603, E8400@3.6 GHz

I have no idea how much this scene is dependent on VGA card, but looks like there is a difference between real FirePro's and modded ones.

The above fact is beyond denial.

I had very good results on two applications with softmodded 3650,3850 and 3870s.

One of them was Alias which did not start up on unmodded 3XXX cards, when modded it worked and was able to use "hardware shaders".

The other one was UG NX4, which scored better results han all published Quadros on SPECapc UG NX 4 benchmark. Quadro FX3500 scores 4,9 : modded 3850 scored 9.98.

All of them are in use at a customer and they are very happy with them for
the last 1 year.

A lot of interesting stuff coming from this thread guys, keep it up.

In case anyone's interested, I'm getting 6.4 - 9.2fps in the mayascene2.ma using the old tried and true GeForce 6800 to FX4000 softmod with a Phenom II X4 940 3Ghz. I'm looking for a new card, so I'm watching this thread closely.

To all!
Just to be sure that the geometry of the island scene is not broken, I put a normaly scene without paint effect, textures and other hard stuff just a poly scene with smooth mesh preview. If I unsmooth all the polygons on the scene I'll get over 60fps and if I smoothed back I'll get around 12 fps .
The island scene have 130MB, my bike scene only 10.7

my results for this mayascene2 are:

4.2 to 6.5 fps on 3870 firepromod 8.453, Q6600@3GHz
5.5 to 8.6 fps on 3870 unmodded cat.9.5, Q6600@3GHz

at least for me, really puzzling...
my tentative interpretation so far (of course only applicable to maya) would be that the pro cards show the biggest improvements right where you don't need them: in a scene where you're already getting >25 fps, they'll give you 3x those fps

While zooming in and out without pressing Alt key : 14 to 62 fps
While zooming in and out by pressing Alt key : 14 to 30 fps
While revolving the scene 8 360 degrees) by pressing Alt key : 12 to 44 fps

The fps depends on how many items are on the view, for example if ı zoom out where I can see volcano and island as small island, the fps is 8.2 - 15 fps. When there is little in the scene, like underwater , the fps is 60+ fps etc.

Generally the fps value is between 20 to 30.

I could not download NormanBates's zip files ( max download limit exceeded), I am now downloading it. Will report it back.

Thats not good news for the Quadro FX 580 . I was hoping for the FX580 to get something like 25 & up fps when you zooming out to see the volcano and the island & other stuff . Same for the modded cards from ATi. Do you think that the scene's geometry is broken?

BTW in linux 64 and hackintosh 10.5.7 I,v got the same resaults .

Maryus3D

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

I'v got something like 6 to 8,7.

EDIT: Windows 7 x64 build 7201 & 185,85 GeForce driver.

Maryus3D

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

I was curious, so I installed the regular radeon drivers on the 4670... and fps are pretty much the same: 6 to 17

what the...??!!??!!

* it can't be that the new mod is not working, because I get similar results with the old mod on my 3870
* but I remember clearly the performance boost when I first modded my HD2600XT
* maybe the newer versions of maya (I'm still on 2008) and/or the standard radeon/geforce drivers make the pro cards pointless?

our results so far:
5 to 14 fps on unmodded 9800gtx
5 to 14 fps on modded 3870
7 to 18 fps on modded 4670
6 to 17 fps on unmodded 4670 (I'd say mod difference is rounding error)
15 to 22 fps on unmodded 4870

edit: I don't like the huge differences in those min-max numbers, and the fact that the "benchmark" is so arbitrary (results will depend on when you point your camera), I'm going to work a bit on a better version...

NormanBates

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

Well, this is getting very interesting...

before we get more people spending time into this, to avoid inconsistent results like the ones I think I was getting when playing around with different driver versions, I created an improved benchmark, building upon Maryus3D's scene (I killed the CPU intensive animation, then included some silly camera movement)

the file is here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/24559750...scene2.7z.html

if you don't have 7zip and/or you can't open .7z files, you can download a (much bigger) zip file with the same content here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/24560106...cene2.zip.html

this benchmark is easier to use and should give us more consistent numbers:
* download .7z or .zip, uncompress it into local drive
* open maya
* if you don't have it already in the lower-right corner, activate the fps display: Display\heads up display\frame rate
* maximize maya window
* open the mayascene2.ma file (it will still give you those "didn't find .jpg/.tga files" errors, it's no problem)
* press play, and look for the highest and lowest fps (should be around frames 130 and 210, respectively) (discard numbers from the first 80 or so frames, they're sometimes not accurate)

my results for this mayascene2 are:

4.2 to 6.5 fps on 3870 firepromod 8.453, Q6600@3GHz
5.5 to 8.6 fps on 3870 unmodded cat.9.5, Q6600@3GHz
5.9 to 9.5 fps on 3870 firepromod 8.603, Q6600@3GHz

5.5 to 8.7 fps on 4670 unmodded cat 9.5, Q6600@3GHz
6.0 to 9.7 fps on 4670 firepromod 8.603, Q6600@3GHz

at least for me, really puzzling...

hi khogan

* the error is there to stay: you don't have the textures (they were not included in the file) so they won't show
* mentalray is a renderer; I didn't expect any improvements in rendering, it depends only on the CPU

the fps should be close to 0.1 when you click play, but that's the CPU's fault

instead of pressing play, do this:
* open maya
* open the downloaded scene
* close all windows but the main one (that is, close hypershade, render view)
* maximize the maya window (if yot maximized already)
* place the cursor in the middle of the screen
* while keeping the ALT key pressed, click-and-drag somewhere in the middle of the screen

as you drag que cursor around with ALT pressed, the camera should rotate, following your moves

look at the fps in the lower righ corner, and post it here, please (you stated some fps above, I assume you already have that indicator working)

I gave him a link with a screan record on PM. Ohh boy i'm very curious . Any way I don't think specview shows the real potential of a card. For example the modded HD3870 give the same score as a modded HD4870 .

I read every single post on here http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=275174 . Is hard to beleve that in maya V7700 have the same performance as V8700 .

Maryus3D

HD 4770 softmod to FirePro V8700 success

I looked up Maya 2009 help and it says "starting with mentalray 3.3 renderer, there is no more OpenGL accelaration".

the error message is "//Warning: Texture file V:/islandcove/textures/board01.jpg doesn't exist, node hut_file5"

The fps is 0.2

1 ) I have Maya 2009 30 day trial installed, sorry for "Maya 2010" I mistakenly wrote.

2 ) Test configuration is :
Gigabyte G31 mobo
C2D E8400 3.0 GHz CPU
Quadro FX580 512MB DDR3 VGA card
2x2GB Kingston DDR2 667 MHZ RAM
XP 32 bit

3 ) Since I do not know anything about Maya, please download the following software. It is free for 30 day trial.

http://www.bbsoftware.co.uk/bbflashback.aspx

Then using it, record all steps I have to follow. After saving the video in its own format, export it to AVI format. It creates a 2MB file 2 minutes of screen recording. Put it somewhere I can download and using this forums "Private Message" utility send me the link of that file.

By the way, I think this software will be very useful for all of forum members.

It is awkward to look to the fps and remember the lowest and highest fps.

Will try that out tomorrow.
I don't know how to do that, sorry
