Can monitor be power off when in extended mode

Can a monitor be power off (not physcially turn off) when in extended mode?

I want it this way so I can watch movies on my HDTV.

I dont want burn in on my monitor while its idle.

I got the HD5750 and using ATI 10.7 drivers.

I believe the only way to do what you're asking is to actually turn off the monitor. I don't believe there is an option to put one into power-saving while keeping the other on with an extended desktop.

Thanks.

That is what I have been doing when I have my monitor connect thru a DVI-D and my HDTV thru HDMI.

Today I bought a DISPLAYPORT cable and when I turn off my monitor, the HDTV and movie would freeze and when I turn my monitor back on, the movie jump back to my monitor.

Anyone has this problem as me and how to correct it?

Can monitor be power off when in extended mode

This is very very puzzling to me!

My monitor is now connected thru a Displayport cable and when it is in extended mode with my HDTV, if I turn off my monitor, my HDTV would freeze! I was watching a movie on my HDTV and the program will just crash and everything would freeze.

I never have this problem when my monitor is connected thru an DVI-D.

Is this a bug?

Has anyone try my scenario?

I uninstall everything, and install everything back.

I am still having this problem.

I guess DISPLAYPORT is not popular for most people.

I'm not sure I understood your q, but if why don't you make separate profiles and have hotkeys? I have 3 modes: 3x1 extended (center monitor as primary screen), 3x1 ultrawide, 3x1 ultrawide with bezel compensation, and 1x1 center monitor on only.

What monitor do you have?
Maybe the monitor is disconnecting itself when you power it off. Could be the way Display Port works.

If you only have 2 screens, I would suggest going back to the DVI cable.

Can monitor be power off when in extended mode

I have the Dell 3008wfp.

Maybe this explaination will help:

1 DVI-D (monitor) + 1 HDMI (HDTV) = In extended mode, I turn off my monitor, my movie still play on my HDMI

1 DISPLAYPORT (monitor) + 1 HDMI (HDTV) = In extended mode, once I turn off my monitor, my movie would FREEZE and CRASH on my HDTV.

If you got a DISPLAYPORT, please try my scenario and you shall see.

I use my 3008WFP as the main monitor (display port) and have my sound/52 inch HDTV connected via HDMI as a second monitor.

So before watching a movie I simply turn off the monitor which makes the HDTV automatically become the main one.

Last I tried to turn off the monitor while watching a movie on the HDTV, it knocked the movie out of fullscreen mode and I had to put it back to fullscreen.

YES!!!

BINGO!

This is exactly what had happen to me.

When I switch off my 3008wfp (connected using Displayport), it knock off and freeze my movie on the HDTV. It turns out that my HDTV is the main monitor now! So I have to restart the movie again.

Then I when I turn on my 3008wfp again, my movie jump back to my 3008wfp.

BUT if I use 3008wfp on a DVI-D, and if I turn it OFF, everything is FINE and movie just keep on playing on my HDTV.

This is such a big stupid bug !!!

I cant believe this.

Did ATI figure this out already ???

You say I can dim out my 3008wfp, yes I can do that, but it generate HEAT at the back of the monitor!

SO now I not making use of my DISPLAYPORT! This is soo stupid!

I have open a ticket with ATI and post this problem on ATI forum also. Lets see what response I get.

best investment is using a black background.. its what i do with my monitors when im lazy and dont feel like turning them off i just minimize everything and you cant tell its even on..

btw the reason this happens is the power saving feature with display port and ATI drivers.. so when you turn off the monitor it drops the card to 137/300 or what ever the single display 2D clock is.. which is probably why its causing the movie to lock up.. just for shits and giggles try using msi afterburner and changing the 2D profile to 400/900 and see if it locks up again.. that or pause the movie turn the display off and unpause the movie should also work but i still think it has to do with the 2D clocks changing..

Using it in black blackground means the monitor is still on and during the summer time, monitor can generate lots of heat.

I want to totally have the monitor off.

From what I see and read, if you turn off the Displayport monitor, the video card really thinks its off and switch your primary monitor to your HDTV which cause the movie lock up. Hence power save with 1 monitor output ???

With DVI monitor, when you turn it off, the video card still think it is on, so I guess it is still running on 2 monitor setup? Power wasted?

What a joy. Got a displayport monitor and vc, yet I cant use it!

I found the problem!

This is my design as said by Microsoft!

But Microsoft is WRONG! Using DVI, it stays! Doing Displayport, once you turn it off, your HDTV becomes your main monitor!

Can monitor be power off when in extended mode

is it the same monitor only with display port or a different monitor?

my guess is its an issue with the way the monitor is doing the display port..

When using any of my current monitors over HDMI or DVI when i turn them off they aren't really "off" like you think they are. The video card still gets the EDID information signalling the PC a Monitor is connected.

it sounds to me like when you power of the displayport screen it actually is not signalling to the video card that a monitor is connected, and in the video cards eyes you have unplugged it.

I don't know if its a display port issue itself or a monitor specific issue but i would start researching that direction..

This is a problem with Displayport on your monitor. If you turn it off, NOW your HDTV becomes your primary monitor!

You will not get this problem if you connect your monitor to a DVI.

If you read the MSFT thread carefully again, you will see what I mean. At first I thought it was ATI problem.
