Question HIS Radeon HD5670 vcard and 3 monitors ( [H]ard|Forum AMD Flavor )

HIS Radeon HD5670 vcard and 3 monitors

I just bought the card in the title and despite various comments I found online implying that it supports three monitors I can't get all three to work at the same time on it. It has a displayport with which I am using a DP to DVI adapter for my center monitor and the other two monitors are connected to the hdmi port and the dvi port on the card. The ones on the hdmi and dvi port are the problem, only one will work at a time? If both are plugged in then just the dvi one works, but when I unplug the dvi one the hdmi connected one comes on. I know most cards only support two dvi connections but in this case I assumed they just replaced one of the dvi ports with a hdmi port, not that they are tied together as one.

Is that normal and there is just a lot of bad info out there about this card supporting three monitors? Am I doing something wrong?

Also the dp to dvi adapter I got is passive which suprised me because I was under the impression that it required a somewhat pricey active adapter to convert from dp to dvi, could that be my problem?

thanks!

You need an active adapter. DP-to-VGA ($25) or DP-to-DVI ($100).

All consumer level video cards only support 2 DVI connections because they only have two timing signal generators, which DVI/HDMI signals require. Using a passive adapter uses one of the two timing signal generators. DP connections don't not require this.

so when I use the passive dp to dvi adapter it essentially turns the dp output into a dvi output as far as the card is concerned?

So basically, without either a display port monitor or an active dp to dvi/analog adapter there is no way to run three monitors off of any single video card?

even the ones that have dual dvi ouputs and a display port?

Sounds to me like the DVI port you are trying to use is shared with the HDMI port.

On the higher end cards it would just be a matter of using the other DVI port. However on the lower end card like your 5670 they don’t usually seem to have two DVI ports.

But yeah you’re going to need to find another way to connect up one of your displays.

Ok, I've rectified the problem by getting a second video card...but now I have another problem.

I want to run the cards in crossfire mode since I have two now anyway but when crossfire is enabled only my primary monitor is turned on and I can't find any way to enable extended desktop in the drivers ( I found mentions of this in searches but no specifics as to how it's accomplished). I'm sure it's possible to use all three monitors on my desktop with crossfire enabled since you can do it in games with eyefinity so the question is, HOW?

Put all your monitors into an eyefinity group, it's the only way.

ok, I can't find a way to do that in the drivers? I have searched and can't find an answer either. is there another download I need to use eyefinity? Is there something about my setup now that would prevent it? ie - two crossfired HIS HD5670 cards connected to three dvi monitors. Seems like this should be more intuitive or I could find more info on it?

You should be able to run all 3 monitors in expanded or cloned mode when Crossfire and Eyefinity are DISABLED.

Using Crossfire and/or Eyefinity requires all monitors to be plugged into a single video card, thus the setup you are trying will not work.

You need a DP-to-VGA or active DP-to-DVI adapter for Eyefinity when not using at least one DP monitor. There are no exception.

And yes to your previous question, using a passive DP-to-DVI adapter essentially turns the DP output into a DVI output as far as the card is concerned.

Sapphire DP-to-VGA seems to work great from the reviews upto 1920x1200.
