Hah, it's a Motorola that's enough to put me off, sorry I've never liked them nor ever will
and yes I have had one or two in the past.

I had a RAZR and it spent more time being fixed than actually working, but im pretty much sold with this one especially since to old Droid had a pretty decent reputation. Just need to find a spare ?400 quid to buy it

I love my milestone and this looks set to be what I upgrade to, the only problem being that... when 2.2 finally makes it onto my phone (september if o2 are to be believed, who knows if not, can get it unofficially already), will it really be that much better? I have mine sitting at 1.2ghz all day long overclocked... is the hummingbird much faster?

Maybe I was being a bit unfair to Moto's, I should have said I didn't like to Moto interface.
Personaly I never had a issue with the build quality, just hated their interface. Maybe I'd consider one as a upgrade, but I'm more than happy with my Desire for now

I agree, I have had 2 Motorola phones in the past and they were just utter pants. Both felt cheaply made.
That slide out keyboard looks like it could be a weak point.
The only redeeming feature here is the Android OS, hopefully they have not hacked it about too much.
I'll stick with my Nexus One ta.

For reference the Milestone (aka the Droid 1, which this shares most of its chassis with) is a very solidly built phone, weighty in the hand and I would say it feels better than the Nexus One or Desire hardware quality wise, and having a keyboard is worth it's weight in gold. Admittedly I did manage to smash the screen on my first one by dropping it oddly, but I reckon the same would've happened with any other large, glass screened phone.
The only Motorola problem is the fact the milestone has a locked bootloader which severely comprises custom roms compared with the unlocked DROID. Thankfully the DROID 2 in the USA will have this as well, meaning that it should be cracked much more quickly than the relatively niche market the Milestone has.

Looks a near perfect option for those wanting a slide out keyboard.
I wouldn't want one again myself, but I'd be getting this if I did.

Is it confirmed it's the hummingbird processor? I ask only because other reports suggest it was a snapdragon?
Not really sure there is much difference between the processors apart from I know the Galaxy S has a Power VR gpu which is built in also?
Anyhoo, yes I'm looking forward to this beasty

Fair play, but once bitten and all that. I do not think I would ever consider another Motorola device, but hey, thats how it works.

The Galaxy S with a slide out keyboard has just been launched in the US but it is 4G so won't work here.
It is not yet confirmed whether or not the Qwerty Galaxy S or the HTC Vision will be available here.

I actually just ordered a Droid1 on a stock clearance which might seem daft, but it worked out $200 cheaper and I actually prefer the phone without the Motoblur stuff, which seems to be a bit Marmite in any event and it will be receiving an update to Android 2.2 anyway, the camera is identical and I think I prefer the D-pad too.
By all accounts, the Droid/2/X basically saved Motorola's ass and is a quality phone, most reviews seem to rate the Droid 1 as one of the best Android phones you can get so I imagine the Droid 2 will be much the same.

Yeah it's a shame - getting really tired of losing all these decent phones to the US CDMA networks! I'm rather keen on the Qwerty Galaxy S.

It's a bit bizarre to me that Motorola are pretty much THE company when you think of wireless communications - their infrastructure gear (big wireless point to point links etc..) is extremely resilient, amazing quality and used world over to power the networks. It comes with a price don't get me wrong but it's just strong, reliable gear.
Then there's the mobile arm who are so hit and miss it's hard to see sometimes that they are the same company (well, in name). Since Moto pretty much bet the farm on smartphone/android last year I think they have turned a lot of the badness around and the original droid/milestone sold in extremely large quantities in the US. I have high hopes for Motorola coming back into play as one of the more respected vendors and this handset seems to back up their continued return to form.

Engadget review is up, doesn't sound that good to be honest.

There's no question that the Droid 1 was entering its twilight years, especially in the aftermath of the Droid X's release; Motorola and Verizon knew they needed to bring the old model up to spec if they wanted to keep a quality physical QWERTY Android device on the shelves. The problem is that in doing so, they've killed off one of the Droid's most endearing features -- the fact that it ran stock Android -- and have failed to make any improvements compelling enough to warrant an upgrade. In other words, Droid owners, don't feel bad that your phone has been replaced here; in fact, we're pretty sure we'd rather have a Froyo-equipped Droid over a Droid 2, especially since the 2's new processor fails to translate into huge performance gains that you can feel in your day-to-day usage.

Ahh, man, that's disapointing. Will be interested to see how that overclocks seeing as the 550mhz one in the Droid 1/milestone sits happily at 1.2ghz all day long. 512mb of ram is the only thing that seems worth upgrading for... perhaps there will be a Droid 3 by the time my contract is up

Yup that's pretty much what I anticipated, I got it today and it's a really solid, professional feeling phone - and stock Android is just great with me rather than some silly UI on top to bog things down and delay updates.
Nice surprise was I thought it came with an 8Gb microSD card but when I popped open the cover it had a 16Gb card in there - might be standard and I just read it wrong somewhere but even so that's a nice capacity to have included with the phone
