HTC is also throwing in its App Share widget that it first introduced with the Wildfire, along with its smart Caller ID feature. Very nice, though it's quite a shame that operator-specific versions of the update are still stuck in testing and are expected "in several weeks' time."

it was mentioned in the official desire thread too i see, but i reckon this merits its own thread

my question is: how do i go about getting it debranded etc and will this allow me to get the update earlier?

Is the Itunes feature an HTC thing or Froyo? Quite handy.

From what I've been reading around the web, if you unlock your phone and it's unbranded then you get your OTA update direct from HTC as opposed to having to wait for your carrier to test the update then pushing it to you at a later date.

Could be wrong though, since there is a lot of conflicting information out there.. thankfully my Desire is unlocked and unbranded at all

Well, HTC Sync is a separate app and it will just use your iTunes library much like doubleTwist and a host of other 3rd party apps that do the same thing.

So, probably just a HTC thing.

i just tried a voda sim in my o2 (ireland!) desire and it worked fine, so i guess its not locked. it does have an o2 splashscreen on boot though, so i guess its branded.

can i just debrand it to get my ota updates from htc do you think?

I would think so, but maybe some of the N1 guys could tell you more though as they've been through this before.

Meant Nexus One silly since they recently had their update to Android 2.2 (Froyo)

So it would be likely someone was in the same situation as you and many other users.

Yeah if it has the t-mobile splash screen then it's their branded software.

is it possible to switch to an unbranded/stock version of the O/S?

People seem to be confusing network branding and network locking.

Network branding is just software which can be removed easily by flashing a generic ROM (after rooting). This will not unlock the phone from the network. You need an unlock code from your carrier (or certain other places) to do this.

Simply removing the branding will not turn your network locked handset into a generic one i.e. you wont receive the generic update until the carrier your phone is locked to releases theirs regardless if you flash a generic ROM.

I noticed this warning posted on XDA Devs

Quote:
DO NOT INSTALL ANY HTC UPDATES OVER THE WEEKEND IF YOU WANT ROOT!
see here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740037

Only important if you want to root your phone.

Meh, I'm sure if you do, a work around will be out in no time.

We have two unbranded Desires on Orange, will they just get their update from HTC? I say unbranded - we get the 'HTC - Quietly Brilliant' startup, and nothing I've seen is Orangey... so fingers crossed?

Typical that there's news on the update now I've just sent my Desire back for repair. I want to play with it! Hopefully get it back soon.

Lydzor

how do you tell if you have unbranded firmware?

_Jimlad_

My Desire came Orange branded then I debranded it using the gold card method. So my question is; will I get the update as soon as it's released?

Yes you should though I am not sure what will happen if your phone is locked, as I know currently if you upgrade the radio then you have to make your orange phone unlocked for it to work.

I hear you can just pay ?10 for code online to unlock the phone if this happens? Anyone got a website I can bookmark incase

my phone seems to be unlocked (its o2 and a voda sim works fine), but has o2 splash screens on boot.

therefore if i flash a generic rom onto the device, will i then be able to get the ota update from htc rather than waiting for o2 ireland (who will NEVER get round to sirting out an update)?

From another forum:

Latest news from Facebook HTC Netherlands:
http://www.facebook.com/htcnl?v=wall

Earlier we announced, Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for the HTC desire will be rolled out in the next couple of days! Due to bandwidth limitations this will be done in steps. Users of a HTC Desire will get an automatic message for the update. The update for operator-branded devices will come in the next couple of weeks.
