Galaxy S Using foreign SIM whilst abroad

OK possibly a stupid question. I'm in New Zealand and using a New Zealand SIM to avoid roaming costs whilst abroad calling people within New Zealand. I assumed it was just a case of swapping the SIM out. It all seems to be OK but it shows a little "R" above the signal box so assume it thinks I'm roaming?

Is there anything else to do to get a mobile working abroad? Can I set it to a different country or do I need to try and find a NZ provider ROM and flash it to stop it showing as roaming?

I'm using a SIM free unbranded Galaxy by the way. I need to set up the Access Point data to test data usage, but I'd prefer the phone to just not think it is roaming when I'm using a local SIM card!

What network you using? It might be a network that simply roams on actual physical networks and so comes up as roaming.

Ahh OK that could make some sense. It is the new one called "2degrees" which my mate says uses the Vodafone infrastructure but I couldn't confirm that. On my Samsung it shows the network as "Vodafone NZ / 2 Degree" which confused me as their phones all just show 2Degree as the network!

Smart phones haven't really taken off here yet. 50mb download allowance a month so all widgets that use internet have been removed and I only use it for Gmail now

EDIT: Found this actually so the roaming thing could be an explanation so it's all good. I'm not in a city whilst in NZ:

Quote:
2degrees has a roaming agreement with Vodafone so that customers are switched to Vodafone’s network when outside the four cities it has located cellsites in. Goss says that around 60% of 2degrees traffic is on their network, and 40% on Vodafone’s.

The little "R" symbol usually means you're roaming but if you are using the local sim card, this symbol shouldn't appear, right? Double check your phone manual.
