The official Dell Streak thread

I've had my streak for a few days now and I'm loving it, however information is scarce when it comes to streak specific information so I thought it would be a good idea to keep anything we find in one place to make it easier for other users to get to grips with this awesome piece of kit.

So without further ado...

The Dell Streak:
The big boy of the phone market with specs to match:

Quote:
Hardware-wise, the Dell Streak features the following:

* A sharp 5-inch capacitive multi-touch WVGA (800x480) display for a great full-screen experience watching video or browsing the web
* Fast 1GHz Snapdragon ARM-based mobile processor from Qualcomm
* 5 MP autofocus camera with dual LED flash that offers easy point & shoot capability and quick uploads to YouTube, Flickr, Facebook and more
* VGA front-facing camera enables video chat functionality down the road
* A user-removable (and replaceable) battery
* A 3.5mm headphone jack means many of you can use the Dell Streak as the music source (and more) in your car
* Integrated 3G + Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) + Bluetooth 2.1 (think headsets, external keyboards, stereo headsets, etc.)
* UMTS / GPRS / EDGE class 12 GSM radio with link speeds of HSDPA 7.2 Mbps / HSUPA
* A user-accessible Micro SD slot expandable up to 32GB. That means you can store lots of movies, music, photos or other kinds of files.

On the software side, here's what you can expect:

* A customized multi-touch version of the Google Android operating system that features Dell user interface enhancements
* Access to over 38,000 apps (and growing) via the Android Marketplace
* Microsoft Exchange connectivity and integration through TouchDown

It's too big to even consider purchasing it.

Yup, quite a nice looking mobile and nice specs, but far too big, just end up looking like an idiot in public when on the phone imo

It's fair comment that the Streak is large for a phone. I've got mine with data only where it makes a cracking portable web browsing device. Has not let me down in this regard other than being a bit flakey as it powers off randomly.

Also, the gorilla glass is not as scratch resistent as reported as I had mine two days and put a scratch on it. Do not know how as it spends its life either in my pocket or on the desk. The only things in my pocket is a wallet and notepad where it could have been the metal ring binding on the notepad that scratched it. Very surprised about this as the video linked in the OP shows how much damage the screen can take without as much as a scratch. Recommend anyone getting a Streak to get screen protectors as a precaution.

It is indeed a large phone, imo it's a nice trade off, big screen is awesome for media

itno I took a key to the demonstration model and couldn't scratch it, I'd be mega bummed if mine got scratched though, screen protectors it is!

As soon as they release a newer version of Android for it and I find another job, I can get rid of my work iphone and upgrade to a Streak

reiyushin, tis wierd how I managed to scratch the screen doing nothing more than putting the Streak in and taking out of my pocket. The scratch is about 2mm in length and noticable when an image is being displayed that is predominately white. Thought at first it was dirt on the screen but turned out to be a scratch so much so one can feel it with a finger nail. Would have thought the only substance that could have scratched the screen was either another Streak screen or diamond.

Hopefully, Android froyo (2.2) will be released for the Streak soon. Android 1.6 is okay but want to catch up with other devices.

Really sucks to have it on such a big screen protectors are first on my shopping list after work tomorrow!

Ye a firmware update is definately due.

I think the American streak (released soon...ish) is coming with 2.1 so we'll get that soon enough then hopefully froyo shortly after that.

If anyone has a Streak and for no reason the screen locks up and the device starts vibrating, apparently this is a 'known of' fault. The only way to correct the problem immediately is to remove the back and battery which is unusual because the Streak should automatically power down when the back panel is removed. The power button does not work, in fact none of the buttons do while the device is doing this. Or, in my case today it did correct itself eventually but I've not waited before for the Streak to correct itself (third paragraph explains why I waited this time instead of removing the battery straightaway).

My guess is that the OS controls the power down cycle and when the device goes into 'manic vibrate' mode, the OS is stalled as one can get the back panel off without it powering off.

Anyway, mine started vibrating this morning so I raced down to the O2 shop to show them except got half way there when it stopped vibrating and returned to normal as could unlock and use the Streak. I estimate it vibrated for about 5 minutes. Went to the shop anyway where the salesperson said that they had seen the 'manic vibrating' mode and it is a 'known of' fault but do not know why it happens. O2 (unofficially as far as I could ascertain) are saying not to worry as the Streak will return to normal or you can remove the battery without harming the device. Salesperson went on to say that the problem is with Android 1.6 and hope it will be corrected when 2.1 is released for the Streak that apparently is real soon now. I did say about 2.2 but he said that is not coming out for the Streak yet unlike the other Android smartphones.

So if you Streak goes locks up and vibrates manically then you can remove the battery or wait for it to correct itself but cannot say how long this is, could be 5 minutes as I found today, could be more or less than 5 minutes. Advice is wait for the update to 2.1 and the problem should go away altogether.

The vibration issue appears to be a result of taking the charge cable out of the device first rather than either switching off at the mains plug or unplugging the USB end from a device.

A possible hot swap issue which hopefully Dell will address, although the lack of updates or US release as yet is a concern for future enhancements!

great looking phone but just a little too big for its own good. If only they did a 4.3 version with an up to date version of Andriod.

How do you get on with pocketing it?

K@rl

Got one today, really loving it and its nice to have a new smartphone rather than my old old W850i. Anyhow my little niggle is that when music is turned up above a certain volume the sound is slightly crackly/static sounding. Is this a problem with my particular unit or is it widespread with the Dell Streak? Won't really bother me as I listen to music through headphones although if it is with my unit only then I'd like to get it fixed

Got a strange bug where I can't add contacts. They appear to add but vanish again after a while. Is anyone else getting this problem? It's incredibly annoying as I have some contacts on there but am missing a fair few that I simply cannot enter. Don't really want to have to wait a month until 2.1 releases for it to be fixed.

EDIT: Found a way around it by adding contacts in googlemail. Works but still silly tbh.

I get a little bit of "static" on bass heavy tracks when playing through the speaker at max volume.

I get it quite a lot at anything louder than 40% and even on tracks with less bass.

Even with parts with pretty much no bass it sounds scratchy/static-y/distorted

EDIT: Here's an audio clip demonstrating my problem. Track is Opening Credits by Hybrid, from Wide Angle. It should sound like this

Guess I'll have to go down the O2 shop somewhen and see what they can do

Yup, I took it yesterday in and demonstrated the problem and they agreed, sadly they had none in stock but I popped in today and they gave me a new one boxed.
