Hi Guys,

Right I had a coolant problem on my 2001 vw golf on saturday and the RAC man removed the thermostat to see if that was the problem (it wasn't) but I now have to put it back. Problem being I am not 100% which way round it goes. I think the brown valve that goes into the spring goes into the engine and the spring is clipped onto the connector?? Is this right? Can't find a decent picture anywhere grr!!!

He took it off and didnt put it back on for you?

Nah as it was towed back to the house so he didn't put it back on, I stupidly didn't ask him to so its partly my fault.

i take it it was over heating? id place a small bet on the water pump being dead

in my experience, though, the stat can only fit on the housing one way



tyhat should be your stat

the lower half of the image should be facing the engine.

the stat housing can be a bugger though if its old and warped. good luck

And yeah the water pump was dead, the plastic impeller had broken in 2 but its all sorted now.
