Clevo Guide - F.A.Q. and Reseller Info
Last Updated: 12-29-2006

Who or What is Clevo.
What kind of Clevo notebooks are there?
Where would I purchase a Clevo notebook?
What is the best place to purchase a Clevo Notebook?

clevo
CLEVO is a large Taiwanese computer company specializing in laptops. While the Clevo brand name is perhaps not widely known, their products are re-branded and sold by known boutique brand OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers)… notably Alienware, Sager, VoodooPC, Falcon Northwest, etc.
They are also considered (by whoever knows about notebooks) to design and manufacturer the best of the best notebooks in terms of superior build quality and innovative designs.

Established in 1983, as an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer), they sell barebones ranging from laptop to portable computing solutions for both AMD and Intel processors. Clevo is one of the world's most preferred ODM partners and markets their products in more than 50 countries, and have established service centers in the USA, Germany, Britain, China, and Taiwan. Their main notebook range includes:
* PortaNote (denoted with an D*** in the model number) - Desktop Replacement and Multimedia systems, with features like support for desktop CPUs and multiple hard drives with a weight that is usually more than 12 lbs.
* MobiNote (denoted with an M*** in the model number) - Thin and Lightweight systems with superior build quality and performance.
* TabletNote (denoted with a T*** in the model number) - Tablet computer systems.
* LCD PC (denoted with an L*** in the model number) - Portable Desktop all-in-one solutions.

To spot a Clevo (for fun):
Within the previous years’ models, the majority of Clevo notebooks have one distinct thing in common… the metallic circle on the top-center, above the LCD where a built-in camera is.
clevoclevo

FYI: When Clevo ships out their notebooks, they are all in barebones form. The OEMs then install the custom (yet standardized) components that a customer would choose... and may even re-brand the notebook with a new coat of paint, adding stickers, and other customizations.

Definition of Barebones: (from Wikipedia) A barebone computer is a half-assembled platform that consists of a case with a power supply, a motherboard preinstalled into the system case, and a cooling system. Barebones are usually designed in a non-standard way and cannot be assembled out of widely available hardware parts. The purchaser of such a platform only has to equip it with a CPU, RAM, hard drive and additional input/output devices depending on his/her own needs.

Final Thoughts:
The best place purchase a Clevo notebook is more subjective than we like. But by making this guide, I hope that you can get more insight on whichever seller that you are looking towards for future purchases.

Another thing about the rating systems is that, we, as a computer consumer should voice our opinions and complaints because, as you can see, some of the ratings are a bit skewed since there are only a few reviews for a certain company and many on another.

Hope this helps, Game on People,
-Gophn

Hi
Nice List you've got there!
But it looks like Nexoc just sells the laptops to companys which then resell them to private individuals. I contacted them about the M570RU and they forwarded the mail to http://www.alb-computer.de/ which seems to be the big german reseller of Clevos and other laptops.
And http://www.xxodd.nl/ seems to be a company in the Netherlands.

yeah that

2 gig dimms are very expensive so i'd imagine it's a business decision not to offer that choice. Windows xp can only make use of 2.5-3 gigs of ram, there's some companies that offer up to 3 gigs!

most vista packages can handle up to 8 gigs of ram

absolutely great guide gophn! it's been a real help in my search for a worthwhile laptop... can't wait for the updated info.... had a question regarding the 570/575 U series, though. At clevo's main site they indicate that the system memory is expandable to 4GB. The resellers i've visited online seem to indicate however that their configurable 570U's are only expandable to 2GB of RAM. Is it that these notebook's can indeed only support up to 2GB of RAM, or is it just that the reseller's are unwilling to sell/configure 4GB notebooks? Just curious if anyone knew what was up.

Clevo Guide - FAQ and Reseller Info

I have another suggestion that might be useful. It would be nice to know who deals with the warranty with each company.

Like for example, PCTorque has 1 year through Sager and then you can extend your warranty through some 3rd party (in which the quality of service may vary).

If people want a 2-4 year warranty, they shouldn't have to put up with the semi bait and switch stunt some of these resellers pull on the novice buyers.

I know it would be a lot of work but it would add more legacy to your awesome FAQ prowess.

EDIT, found another clevo reseller

Hi, I'm planning to buy a gaming laptop later this year and from this forum I thought the clevo ones looks pretty promising... However, my father will be buying the laptop for me and he will only buys from a store but not from online (no matter how many times I try telling him that online shopping is safe). I think he will buy the laptop in Hong Kong or in Shanghai. So do you guys think there are any shops which sells Clevo laptops over those 2 places? Or do you guys know of any other mothods (except ordering online)? If not I will not be able to get a clevo and I may become a very sad sad person... Plz help!

Tell him to call up:
- Powernotebooks.com (ask for Donald)
- Flawlesscomputers.com (ask for Brian)
- XoticPC.com (ask for Justin)

He will not be disappointed, I promise. These guys are not salesman, they are all very knowledgeable and helpful, they will answer any (and I mean ANY) and all questions/concerns. He wont have to worry about the internet.

Well, Clevo is based in Taiwan, they should have some resellers in that area, but it might not be easy to find, since the markets for the gaming notebooks are everywhere else on the planet.

Clevo as well as many other custom notebooks are very rare to find in stores, especially retail chains (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.). Where are you located? I know of a number of Clevo resellers that would let you come in person to check out their notebooks.

Thx very much for your reply! I am a Engineering university student and I am living in Adelaide, South Australia. However, my father is the one with all the cash so he will be buying the laptop for me (probably after some good DX10 cards come out for notebooks). My father currently works in Shanghai but he will go to Hong Kong once in a few months. From my experience he prefers to buy stuff in Hong Kong... Also, from your previous post, what did you mean by "Tell him to call up:

Namely in North America:

I'll add my congrats to a great post. Btw, Widow PC charges a huge premium as do a few other boutique builders, for the paint job. E.g. M590ke with same specs - Hypersonic/Sager/RJ Tech/M-Tech, around 4,200 with 3 yr warranty. WidowPC, 6,190. Go figure

Wow holy **** I have been looking around the internet to find my perfect laptop and so fare I’m very disappointed about what is offered in laptops for non gamers but still wants high end performance.

What I’m looking for is a light thin 17" WUXGA laptop that runs silent and has long battery life, it should also include an WORKING D-DVI to run DELL 30" screen and have a very good WIFI implementation for stable long-range connection.

So fare im out of luck it seams like non of the high end computers has an working D-DVI output. And all the good machines like M570U/M575U generate so much heat and sounds to much and crapy battery life because of all the super performance.

Im not an expert at this so i might very well be wrong about everything im saying but please do correct me then  . I yeast think you are the perfect person to ask about a computer that fits this settings.
Im living in Sweden so i need an European brand I was looking at xtreme ctx pro but I guess the D-DVI is not working and it must sond like a devil with the 9750 GTX generating al that heat.

Maybe the M570U with ATi Mobility Radeon X1600 as an option would generate less heat and run more quite and it has also support for D-DVI but for some reason manufactures don’t connect more than a single link internally???

The best match i have found so fare is the Area-51 m5790 this run extremly silent according to reviews the bad thing is i cant by it in Sweden and it has no working D-DVI (Is this a Clevo machine??)

Best regards Henrik

Additional reseller and quick review:

I purchased an "Open Box" M750U from a reseller in Michigan US, Apocalypse Computers, a few weeks back. They originally had the unit on eBay, but kept getting spam-bids; we negotiated a BIN via email and they ended the listing early.

These guys have no feedback, no reseller ratings, and no real mentions online, except for a number of paid ads that must have cost a pretty penny. I was concerned that I might be getting scammed, so I did as much homework as possible. They were very quick to respond to my (many) email messages, and answered the telephone whenever I called. I consider myself to be very cautious when purchasing tech online, and they calmed my fears as much as possible. As soon as my funds cleared I received a UPS tracking number, and within a few days had a beautiful (and cheap) Clevo in my hands.

However... (Disclaimer: As this was an open item, I don't know if the following is a result of reseller QC or due to the remorseful original buyer) My M750U shipped with a carrying case that smelled and felt like a quart of oil had been spilled on/in it. It's still airing out on my front porch. Also, half of the screws to the bottom access panel were missing. No biggie, but I'm pretty particular. More importantly, though, the unit shipped with the power brick, but no Edison tail to plug into the wall. I emailed Apocalypse and told them; they offered to ship me the missing part immediately. I had a spare, so I declined. I can't comment on their follow-up or after-sale customer service.

Anyway, all things considered, my experience with Apocalypse was positive...

When you say about Eurocom that "website should not be taken seriously", what do you mean? Is it that they list their system higher than sell them, or that you can get good bargain when dealed with the company?

Also, is all the prices at Hypersonic are in US$?

Thank you

I mean that one person [like yourself] should not just think that Eurocom's prices are written in stone. They can be bargained with easily if you just contact them. In most cases... for some that have done business with them, they will beat all Clevo reseller's prices if they need. And Eurocom is very much reputable, and great company to purchase from especially if you are in Canada.

A little info for those of you who live in Europe.

I have just spoken to a relative, who happens to be in the Italian Guardia di Finanza or "Fiamme Gialle" (a special police corps which specialises in money-related crimes such as laundering, illegal imports and exports, tax evasion etc.)

Inside the EC there are no Import related taxes.

VAT is calculated in the country you bought it from.

That said, the cheapest place I have found a Clevo D901C is http://www.pcw.fr @ 1599 Euros. However, add the 8700 SLI to the equation (+794 Euros) and that reseller doesnt seem so attractive anymore.

The best deal so far I reckon is Alb-Computer.de http://www.alb-computer.de/index.php?cPath=1_5_308
They resell Nexoc laptops in various trim levels. I have contacted them about the possibility of modifying the specifications on offer. Will let you know as soon as they reply.

A few questions dont know weather its been asked before...

I have a D900T which i got a couple of months shy of 2 years ago.

Today ive noticed the laptops screens been glitching blue :/ and at one point everything on blue turned very noisy and ghosty :/

I hate to think the graphics card is dying or the screen is dying so please any advice.

Today i also installed the latest direct x and im using the Xtream G laptop drivers witch i installed a week ago.

Oh and Xp.

whats my options :/ If i really must get a new lcd plate where can i get one for a good price.

Also i noticed its the same socket type can i install the q6600. If not why not.

Also what about 8800 gtx go cards? Are they an option to install... And again if not why not.

Thanks for your time...

I was just making sure because I recently fielded a question where someone said they had been recommended to buy from Flawless Computers, and I had to explain the whole, sad story.

make sure that you tell Eurocom the price from RJtech in Canadian $$ not US currency.... thats why they refused with the huge gap.

Gophn

Clevo Guide - FAQ and Reseller Info

Hi, I contacted Eurocom asking to match r&j tech's price and they refused, they are almost 700$ over (for Clevo M570ru).

Now I need to find somewhere else to buy this laptop in Canada because I do not want to pay the custom fees (which must be very high). Does any1 know another place where I could buy this laptop? (As barebone if possible)

1) California is perfect for those that are looking for a Clevo notebook, 2 of the largest companies for selling/distributing Clevo's are located in the City of Industry:
- Sager
- Pro-Star

You can purchase through either of them.... or I would recommend to order through one of the Sager resellers (XoticPC or Powernotebooks) to get better support.

2) Do NOT worry about the dead pixel insurance... it is rare to get a notebook with a dead pixel since they check for it before it goes out to transit.... in the unlikelihood of of one or more, you can just ship it back for an exchange/refund.... because Sager (as well as other vendors) have a full satisfaction guarantee.

I'm in California, US. I was curious what is the best company to buy a NP5790?

Also what is the whole dead pixel deal about? Am I going to get a laptop with dead pixels or will the pixels die eventually? What is that all about?

I need to get an adapter for the brick but that seems to be the only issue to me. All input is appreciated

I have a excel file of marasst with compal ifl90/91 forcasts and nexoc is in the list. Marasst delivers to Multicom, Zepto, N4ALL, ASA, NEXOC.

Clevo Guide - FAQ and Reseller Info

This is a great guide! I just came across this forum as I was doing research on gaming laptops and I decided to join in the hopes that you all can help me out. Yes, my very first post, and I'm begging for help!

I'm fairly new to the world of gaming (and completely new to the concept of a gaming laptop!) and don't really know what I'm looking for in a gaming laptop. The games I typically play are City of Hero's, Guild Wars and I just downloaded Lineage II and World of Warcraft. WOW is what put me over the edge. My poor little Toshiba (in no way a gaming machine) finally had enough and let me know it by taking 6 hours to load the game. And the best part....I don't think I like the game!

From the research I've done so far it sounds like I want a Clevo, DDR2 or DDR3, Intel Duo Core, two hard drives (though I don't know why - better, faster performance I assume???) and a really good video card. Not sure if Windows XP is better or Vista.

I'd like to buy from a USA based company as I'm in Pennsylvania and I'm leaning towards buying from M-Tech Laptops but wanted to see if anyone had any negative thoughts on them or a better company to order from. Overall, they've got a great rating, but the ones for 2007, not as good. I've read enough to stay away from Alienware and WidowPC. I'd like to stay as much under $3000 as possible.

As you can see, I just like to play games, and am very much a novice when it comes to computer specs. So, any help would be greatly appreciated that will help me get the best gaming laptop for me, and keep me from getting ripped off!

Many thanks!

CelticLass

Welcome to the NBR forums.

There is nothing wrong with M-tech, but you can get a much better value (w/ service/support) if you look towards:
.... etc... (in this Guide's ratings)

Stay away from Alienware and WidowPC... since they are extremely overpriced... for what you get.

I need to know your budget, size preference, etc... to better give you suggestions.

I would recommend to go to the What Notebook Should I Buy? sub-forum, and fill out the FAQ.
_________________________________

Although if you have $3000 I would strongly recommend to look at these two models, they will be the notebooks to beat for 2007-2008:

Clevo M570RU (a.k.a. Sager 5790, Rock Xtreme 770, etc.)

This will be the best 17" gaming notebook for the money for 2007-2008.

No rip-off pricing like others that will be in its class, Dell XPS, Alienware, etc..

Highlights:
- up to 17" WUXGA (1920 x 1200)
- new mobile Core 2 Duo's (Santa Rosa)
- up to 4GB DDR2
- interchangeable MXM videocard (Nvidia 7950GTX or 8700M GT).. ready for more high-end DX10 cards
- standard Optical bay (ready for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD)
- Full keyboard w/ Numpad
- Fingerprint Reader

These notebooks should be starting around $1900.

Pre-orders are being taken for this HOT model by Sager and their resellers.
... more in the Clevo Guide for more resellers.

Check out the following sites for it:

.... and much more in the Clevo Guide

Differences:

The D900C is a desktop replacement with more power (desktop CPU and SLI interchangeable MXM videocards, less batterylife, and more storage (3 HDDs).

The M570RU is a powerful notebook with optimal power (new mobile CPUs and single interchangeable MXM videocard, better batterylife, and single HDD.

So these notebooks are both powerful, but has different features that makes them distinct from consumer to consumer.

They are both great machines, but the D900C is more costly... while the M570RU has better portability (batterylife and weight).

Its just up to you on what would fit you better.

Hope this helps,
-Gophn

Clevo Guide - FAQ and Reseller Info

Thanks for the quick reply Gophn! I'll definitely take a look at those two laptops. Here's a little more detail.

I'd like to stay as much under $3000 as possible. I'd be more comfortable with spending $2000-$2500. Though I'm willing to spend up to $3000 if I can't get a great gaming laptop for less than that. Whatever I buy needs ot last me for several years so if I spend more now, and just upgrade later, I'd prefer to do that. I'll also use it as a general laptop for the pet sitting business I just started.

I'm not too concerned with weight as I won't be super mobile with it, but the lighter the better of course! I'll mostly have the laptop plugged in, but it would be nice to have a decent battery life. I'd like to stick to a 17" widescreen monitor, anything smaller would drive me nuts, and I think anything bigger would be out of my price range. 100GB+ HD would be nice considering I've almost filled my current 100GB HD. Full size keyboard and numeric pad would be nice.

Thanks!

Definitely would recommend the Clevo M570RU (Sager 5790) for you then.

You can get a fully loaded system for less than $2500 at the moment.

Remember to make quotes from RJtech.com, XoticPC.com, and Hypersonic... since they are known for having best prices usually.

and then use those quotes to bargain with Eurocom.

They dont sell exactly the same notebooks, only Sager (and their resellers), ProStar/M-Tech and Eurocom might have the same notebooks for sale.

Alienware sells notebooks that are re-branded Clevo's, Arimas, etc...

Each vendor can choose to sell which ever notebook they want... as well as re-brand them however they want.... like custom paint jobs, stickers, Alien-head, etc... which would make you pay more of a premium for those customizations.

Gophn,

A top ten review .

Since I live in France there I found 2 companies that sale CLEVO laptops, I do not know anything about there costumer service( France is not very well know by there costumer services, so I would not count on it ). I will try to dig more into it (There prices are high ), but meanwhile these are the sites

1) company name: nicediscount
web site: http://www.nicediscount.fr/
city: NICE France
Models: M590KE,M590K,M570U,M550N,M520G and my future BB the D900C

2) company name:
web site: http://www.pcw.fr
city: PARIS France
Models: D900K, M590KE, M570U, M520N

By the way, I tried to check Flawless Computers products and looks like there site is down or they are out of the business .

I have just ordered a d900c from eurocom, nice people to talk to if they will ring you back. Must say that they told me 5-7 days till it is shipped out when ordering. Now eurocom is telling me 2 weeks before they have it instock. As for price matching they wont budge ( on the d900c ), which is fair enough. unsure of duty tax in canada but rjtech and xoticpc are way cheaper on price even when converted in can dollar
